Ep 8: Knowing When to Walk Away (And Hand Over Your Dream)

Bryan and Ryan welcome Chris Kendrick to talk about the origins of Joshua Tree, knowing when to walk away from a business, and how a fight over a paperclip started it all.

Welcome back to Out of the Desert! Today we are joined by our very first special guest: Chris Kendrick, the original founder of Employment Matters of South Georgia, the company that eventually became Joshua Tree Service Group.

Ryan and Chris discuss how a mutual connection, a vocational rehab counselor, introduced them at the exact right time. Chris shares his raw, honest reality of hitting a wall with the state's billing system and realizing he didn't have the emotional capacity to keep running the business he had started in 1999. They detail the famous meeting at the Dogwood Cafe where Chris offered Ryan the opportunity to build the company with zero salary, ultimately leading to Ryan taking full ownership in 2021.

Plus, Chris tells the hilarious "rest of the story" about how his entire journey as a business owner started back in 1998 because of a near bar-fight with his boss over office paperclips.
